Conductor & Music Director

Dr. John Bannon conducts the St. Petersburg Community Band, and has conducted the USF Health Orchestra, band and orchestra at St. Petersburg College, and was associate conductor of the University of Miami Orchestras. All as adjunct to a performing career as timpanist of The Florida Orchestra as well as orchestras in his hometown Anchorage, Oklahoma City, Honolulu, and summer festivals in Mexico City and Boulder. He graduated from Northeast High School in St. Petersburg, earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in percussion performance from USF and the University of Michigan, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Instrumental Conducting from the University of Miami. He’s married to a flutist in the Sarasota Orchestra, herself an alumna of NEHI, USF and Michigan. Their daughter is an alumna of USF and elementary teacher in Hillsborough County, their son is an alumnus of the Oberlin Conservatory and USF and a freelance percussionist in the Tampa Bay region.
